Are Shopify apps worth the money, or can I manage my store without them?

I'm thinking about adding a few apps to my store but the monthly price will be quite expensive. I'm trying to decide whether apps are really worth the investment or maybe I should look for an alternative, like hiring a developer to add the features I need to my store. What do you all think?

Of course, Shopify apps are worth the money. App developers create products that make your life as a merchant much easier. What if an app can free up 2 hours of your time every day? Or even just 2 hours every week? How much is it worth to you? What if something breaks and your store can’t sell for an entire day? How much money could you lose? What if a review app can increase your sales conversion rate by 25%? The question shouldn’t be if Shopify apps in general are worth the money, it should be ‘what apps do I need for my Shopify store?’

On WordPress, you buy a plugin and use it forever. There's no subscription cost like on Shopify. And WordPress constitutes about 30% of all internet websites. So many people got used to Wordpress's 'pay once, use forever' model. The problem on Wordpress is that plugins break or stop working altogether, and quite often, there's no one you can reach out for support because the developers went out of business... Then Shopify came along with a subscription model, just like Netflix, Showtime, Amazon Prime, Hulu, etc., and disrupted the market. The subscription model is much more profitable for developers. Hence they can create much better apps, maintain them over time, and offer excellent customer support. The fact that goos developers make a lot of money on Shopify simply shows that the model works and that merchants find their apps very useful. I think apps solve real problems for merchants, problems that would cost a lot to solve individually. Isn't it great that you can send your customers push notifications for about $30 a month? Or that you can show beautiful reviews for $10 a month? I don't think that the question is whether or not apps are worth the money. No, the question is whether you have a better solution for the problems you face as a merchant.

I agree. In the long run, a subscription model is more expensive for merchants than a one-time payment, but without it, I believe some apps would not survive. Apps solve many problems and offer many new features for Shopify merchants. When you buy a $3,000 custom development project for your store, the developers don't offer support for years to come. But when you use an app for about $20-$50 a month, the app developers provide excellent customer support over time (or they're soon out of business...). App developers improve their apps based on the feedback they receive from thousands of merchants. They can afford to invest a lot of money in new features, bug fixes, etc. For that reason, their apps will always be better than anything you can create by yourself. Also, if you need a new feature for your store and you install an app for a small monthly price, and after a while, you realize that you don't need it, you can just remove it and stop paying. If you paid a developer a one-time fee to develop the same feature and later found out it's not necessary, that would be quite a lot of money down the drain. Of course, the monthly subscriptions can add up. But, all in all, the monthly subscription model works really well for merchants.
