How would you upsell from Free Shipping to Paid Shipping?

Asked 7 years ago

I have a lot of customers who choose to use Free Shipping, however, I would like to upsell these customers and have them choose Paid Shipping. What is the best way to upsell shipping on Shopify? How would you upsell from Free Shipping to Paid Shipping?

If you sell unique products which cannot be purchased elsewhere, I would suggest that you always charge for shipping. If people refuse to pay for shipping, or cannot justify paying shipping for your products, then you may need to try to differentiate your products further or try to market your products differently to sell customers on the benefits of the product.

If you sell generic products that can be found on sites like eBay or Amazon, your product will be compared to identical products based on price. In this instance, free shipping will be more important to buyers. The great thing about Shopify is that you are able to sell unique products and operate in speciality niches, meaning that free shipping is less important to customers.

I recommend offering different time periods for different shipping rates, for example:

  • $0.00 Free Shipping (7 days)
  • $8.95 Standard Shipping (3 days)
  • $19.00 Express Shipping (1 to 2 days)

That way, customers will choose to upgrade and pay a higher shipping rate to receive their products quickly. The trick is to find the perfect shipping rates and shipping durations to entice customers to upgrade.

You could try to offer free shipping to customers only if they order above a certain dollar amount. That way, people will purchase more products to get free shipping.

There are 3 things that you should take note of:

  1. The order in which you present the shipping options will often determine which option is selected. If you have "Free Shipping" as the first option, most people will select it. I would recommend that you include the shipping rates from highest to lowest.
  2. The default shipping option is often left unchanged by customers. I would suggest that you set the default to be the middle shipping rate, rather than the "Free Shipping" option. I would also suggest that you place the phrase "Most Popular" next to the middle shipping rate to persuade customers to select the middle option.
  3. If you run a time-sensitive campaign or promotion, such as a Christmas special or Mother's Day special, people tend to leave their shopping for the last minute and will be more likely to pay higher shipping rates to receive their products on time. For these types of promotions or specials, I would recommend that you select the most expensive shipping rate as the default and include a phrase such as "Guaranteed to arrive by Mother's Day" next to the shipping rate. That way, customers will be inclined to select the highest shipping rate to ensure the delivery of their products on time.

To me, free shipping is very important. As a customer, I will never buy a product if shipping is charged on the purchase and because of this, I do not have any shipping fees on my Shopify store. I factor the shipping costs into my product prices and have found that customers are much more willing to pay more for a product and have free shipping than to pay less for a product but pay for shipping, even if the two options work out to the same balance.

You can upsell your products by ensuring they are unique and valuable from what other sellers offer. Customers do not care much about shipping charges if you place high-quality products with the best prices in exclusive niches. To lock the deal further, employ an effective OP app to do the work for you. It will determine your customers' inclination to buy your products and attracts them by showing them the best price range. This strategy works great if you want your customers to shift towards paid shipping.
