How can I prevent discount coupon abuse on my Shopify store?

Does anyone know how to identify and prevent coupon abuse on Shopify stores? Recently I've been seeing a spike in discounted purchases on my store but I haven't done anything marketing/strategy wise to warrant such an increase so I'm getting a little suspicious. Has anyone had this happen to them as well?
