Is it worth it to increase your mobile score on Google Page Speed Insights?

Asked 4 years ago

We are currently trying to optimize our website for mobile as Google Page Speed Insights currently only scores us 13 out of 100.

Has anyone had any success with increasing their mobile score? If so, was it worth it?

I don’t think this matters too much. Some of the biggest websites have a score of only 10/100.

It is worth increasing the score of your mobile is important for user experience. Users will exit a slow loading site as they are used to fast loading websites, especially on mobile. The recommended website loading speed is 3 seconds so if your site is loading slower than that, you may lose customers.

Here are some simple ways you can improve your score:

Compress your images – images on your site need to be of high quality. This does not mean that they have to be large and oversized, however. Compressing your images reduces the file size without affecting the quality of the image.

There are many free and paid for Shopify Apps that you can download to do this for you including ‘Crush.pics - SEO Image Optimizer + Image Compression’ and ‘Photo Resize’.

AMP – Accelerated Mobile Pages is a framework implemented by Google because they know so much online traffic is coming from mobile users. This speeds up websites for mobile devices and will improve your insights score.

Shopify Apps such as ‘FireAMP’ and ‘RocketAmp’ have great ratings on the Shopify App store and are worth checking out.

Apps – Take a look at the Shopify Apps that you currently have downloaded and delete the ones you no longer use. When you have Apps still downloaded but they are not in use, the code that helps them load up will still be running, therefore by deleting the App, you are deleting unnecessary code too.

Also, note there is a more accurate way to test your site’s mobile speeds rather than Google Page Speed Insights. ‘Test My Site’ will give you a better idea of how your site performs on mobile

Yes. It is worth it to improve and increase your mobile score on Google Page Speed Insight. If you are a business page with a good website following, you should ensure a minimum efficient speed on your Google Page Speed Insights. It shows you the speed of your website, the upload and download trends, and how fast your website reaches its viewers.

The most significant pros of a high score on Google Page Speed Insights are:

Great for Search Engine Optimization

It helps generate organic traffic as viewers come directly to the page

Slow speeds cannot offer all the necessary information at once

It is reliable and accurate; provides a good idea about the user experience on your website

Don't look at the score, look at metrics like TTFB, FCP, etc. These will show you what to improve if you research them properly and narrow your problems down. If each frame takes a long time to load, your site is likely too busy and there are issues to solve.

Yes, it is certainly worth increasing the mobile score on Google Page Speed Insights, especially if you have an e-commerce store with varieties of products. Whether on the mobile or your computer, a page with great speed ensures a smooth experience for the viewers or consumers. If your website is too slow and the products take too long to load, it is going to hurt your sales, and you might lose the chance of turning visitors into potential consumers.

Irrespective of the level of impact it has got on your website optimization. It always good to have a good score, considering the mobile traffic compared to desktop traffic. Hope this helps.
