Why was the MailChimp app kicked out of Shopify's app store?

Asked 4 years ago

The Shopify forums don't really seem to have much about this topic, but when I looked I couldn't seem to find the Mailchimp app for Shopify.

MailChimp didn’t agree to Shopify’s new terms and conditions, and so they left, they were not kicked out. They didn’t agree to let store owners see their customers’ unsubscribe status. Now, if you don’t know your customers’ unsubscribe status, you may keep sending them emails. Sending emails to unsubscribed customers is considered spam, and in most western countries, you’d get a fine for every spam email sent. This can accumulate to a s**tload of money. I really don’t understand MailChimp’s motives for such an odd decision. Besides that, Mailchimp and Shopify are competing. Mailchimp bought an eCommerce platform (LemonStand), and Shopify is opening an email service. The competition between Lemonstand vs Shopify could be another factor.

According to shopify: "We recently updated our policy for app partners to make sure you have up-to-date, accurate customer data for your business. One of the changes is that if an app collects certain customer data relevant to your business through a Shopify channel, it now has to sync this information back to your Shopify admin. That way, even if you use multiple apps, your customer data in Shopify is accurate. You also won’t have to worry about manually syncing this information back and forth between your apps and Shopify. This is important because it helps you respect your customer’s settings and it’s also necessary to help you comply with anti-spam regulations. Mailchimp refused to comply with this policy, which is why they are no longer in the Shopify App Store".
