Shopify doesn't include brokerage fees in their international shipping prices with UPS
Asked 4 years ago
FYI. Shopify's international shipping prices with UPS don't include brokerage service. Thus, they are very misleading. I just sent a package from USA to Canada. The customer selected UPS Standard Shipping for $22.44. I included a Certificate of Origin to make sure the customer would not be charged any duties. Upon arriving in Canada, UPS contacted the customer and charged an additional fee of $85 for Brokerage fees. Duties were not charged. I contacted Shopify customer support and they were zero help. Shopify refused to contact their UPS rep and kept directing me to links with irrelevant information. Shopify was unable to tell me what their customs brokerage policy is with UPS. Is there any way to work around this and what should I do?

UPS's misleading conception is very troublesome that can result in charging hidden fees from your Canadian customers. In your case, the customer might have paid his applicable local taxes as the brokerage fees. To avoid this, try shipping through companies that offer all-in rates. Thus, your customer doesn't get any surprise costs or additional fees at the end.
