Would you recommend opening a Shopify store as a side business while keeping my day job?

In my opinion, you should consider your work-life balance. I have 2 Shopify stores - one sells jewelry, and the other sells cloths. I run them simultaneously, and it can get very intense... To be honest, I wouldn’t be able to do this as a side business while keeping a day job. I decided to outsource inventory and fulfillment to reduce the workload. You know, every business owner has their strengths and weaknesses, and my opinion is that one should get as much help as possible. I’m very much focused on marketing, and I consider myself pretty good with it too. But when it comes to logistics. Well, let’s say I prefer to have someone else do it for me. So, if I were you, I’d think about how much free time I have and what portion of it I’d be willing to dedicate to a new business, taking into consideration that it will affect my work-life balance.

I'm a mom of 3 and have worked part-time jobs to support my family while starting my Shopify store. I'd say it's hard but very possible. You must be very determined to do it though, being a business owner and an entrepreneur is really not like being an employee. In the beginning, till you can stand on your feet, I wouldn't outsource anything. The cost of spending money when you're not making any is high, and it can even be painful unless you have a lot of savings and can afford it. Be penny-pinching and spend money only when you have to or when you're sure you'll get a positive return. Once your orders start taking off, that's a different story, of course. Even when it comes to accounting and bookkeeping, you can do quite a lot by yourself using QuickBooks or other accounting software or find pretty decent guys on Upwork for the day to day business. You'll probably need an accountant come tax season. And if we're talking about early days' tight budget, you shouldn't be surprised that marketing can be quite costly, and there may not be a way around it since you won't be able to sell anything otherwise. You may want to invest some time learning some SEO tricks and best practices to reduce costs.

Hi, I was still working full time when I started my Shopify store, and you bet it was stressful. But you know what? I did it and so can anyone else who is committed. Just don’t expect it to be easy, It is a lot of work… After two years of side hustle, I grew it to the point where I didn’t need a day job anymore. Five years later, all is good. My advice is cliche, but “Just Do It.” Don’t sit around, waiting for input, or worrying about accounting and logistics. Figure that stuff out as you go once you make a few bucks figure out how to incorporate. So many people get lost in the details and never got off the ground. Good luck!
