Should I keep trying to sell in a niche after having a negative ROI for 5 months?

Asked 3 years ago

I've been trying to sell a specific product to a specific target audience with no luck for the past 5 months. I ran Facebook and Instagram campaigns that all resulted in negative ROI. Would you keep trying or move on?

I think that your problem might be that you selected a niche before a product. My advice to you would be to pick a product, test it as quickly as possible and on a small budget as possible and then build your audience around it. Also, If you do want to focus on a niche, test your assumptions to see if you selected the right niche and whether your audience respond well to your product. Reason number one is knowledge. I bet you don't really know your clients. If you want to invest your money in whatever you have to be very careful where you are going to spend it. You need to be sure that even in the worst scenario you can get this money back. After 4-5 months you probably lost enough and I recommend to sell the store on Flippa as soon as possible otherwise you will lost more money. There are thousands of people selling phone cases so different and so cheap. You would need a strong brand or really outstanding product or a lot of money for advertising and unique product. It is not that easy. If I were you, I would look around you, do not listen to BS from youtube how easy is to sell through shopify advertise products on FB or Instagram.

Selling in a niche market requires a lot of research beforehand to ensure that there is a need and want for the product that you are wanting to sell. Customer research is crucial in creating a product that is going to sell and result in a positive ROI.

It sounds like you may need to do some more research before you start running ads again to make sure there are customers for your product. Learn all you can about your customer. What do they like? Dislike? Where are they in the world? Where do they shop online? Answering all of these questions will give you a rounded idea of who they are, meaning you can target them more profitably.

Also, look into keywords. What are your customers searching for? Doing keyword research and finding out which keywords will most relate to your business will help you to create content that will appeal to the right people. Check out Google’s Keyword Planner to look at search volumes and go from there.

When you know your customer and know what keywords they are looking for, start creating content based on what you know. Create blog posts and social media posts to build up your brand and gain the trust of your customers.

There can be a misconception that stores start making money instantly, however, there will be a lot of work to put in beforehand to get customers interested. When you have built up a following you can then push your product in your niche. If you eventually find that even after all the hard work of gaining followers, interacting with them and gaining their trust, you are still not selling. There just may not be a need for the product.

Our advice is to get researching more, build up a presence online and see where that takes you.

Dropship business success rate is 10% in the first year of operation. If you have the goal to build your business into a brand, then practice patience. You can improve your ROI by using these strategies:

  1. Improve your customer service.
  2. Change strategies; some things that work for others might not work for you.
  3. Focus on the keyword with low competition and high search volume.
  4. Focus on the right audience and see where it goes in a year.
