Can I change my domain name on my Shopify store?

Asked 4 years ago

I have a Shopify store and would like to change the domain name. What do I need to do to run the store on the new domain? Should I change the domain name that I used for setting up my Shopify account? If I do change my domain name, should I use a third-party registrar like NameCheap or something similar, or would Shopify's custom domains be acceptable?

Hi, Mark here from KeepShoppers

You can buy a custom domain name from Shopify or any third-party domain registrar and then make it the primary domain for your Shopify store.

The primary domain is the domain name that clients see in the address bar while browsing your Shopify store. By default, your primary domain looks like that - my-store-name.myshopify.com. It is used to log into your store.

Here is what you need to do -

First you need to set up your domain name. If your domain name is from GoDaddy, Google, or 1&1 IONOS, follow the next steps to automatically connect your domain to your store -

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Domains
  2. Click Connect existing domain
  3. Enter the domain that you want to connect, such as keepshoppers.com
  4. Click Next
  5. Click Connect automatically
  6. In the Sign In window, log in to your GoDaddy, Google, or 1&1 IONOS account
  7. Click Connect

Verify your connection in Shopify - Click Verify connection in your Shopify admin to confirm that your custom domain has been connected to your store. Note that It might take up to 48 hours for your custom domain to point to your Shopify store.

After your custom domain is set up you should make it your primary domain -

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Domains
  2. In the Primary domain section, click the Change primary domain
  3. Select the domain that you want to set as your primary domain and click save
